Last of the three M4 variants the AFP used in the 1950s, this project is one of the more interesting projects i have ever done.  There is no injection molded M4 Composite hull kit yet as of this writing locally more so in 1/72 scale.  There are resin conversion sets available in other countries but you would have to spend an arm and a leg to get one.

So to finish my PA armor of the 50s series, I decided to kitbash one - again significant as the  first composite hull sherman in braille kitbashed locally, AFAIK...

ABOUT THE COMPOSITE HULL M4 SHERMAN:

Most pictures of AFP armor of the 50s showed either this type or the M4A1;  A composite hull sherman simply said has the cast hull of the M4A1 upfront and the angled hull of the M4A3 at the rear. Most of these types were sent to the Pacific Theatre of Operations, hence explaining our excess number of composite hull m4s back in the 50s.  The sole remaining M4 at PMA is an example of the composite hull variant.

THE KITS:  I used two Trumpeter 1/72 scale M4s one mid production the other a M4A1 76 mm kit.  Simply by dead reckoning this is what I came up with:

so continuing the build- ekkk! a big gap between the mated hulls! after some gentle persuasion and lots of putty...

ok, taking shape...

aha...

so finally...

ooops! the M2 HMG above the turret wasnt dry yet when I took this picture hence its absence...notice the fine periscope guardrails- ultra small, very fine pieces of metal to bring life to the rather dull colored kit..

the fine (??? for the hobby masters thats not too fine-  the angle isnt correct, there are lotsa scratches, etc- ok go nitpick, les hobby masters....) lines of the composite hull.

minimal weathering, fortunately my greatest fear of the tracks not fitting in the mated hulls did not happen... still not finished, a  set of decals still is lacking ( attention homerboy!!!) to complete this model..

enjoy! Shocked

Agreed! thumbs up  I believe that modelling is an ART, an expression and 'concretization' of one's inspiration and concepts.  Kung baga -- extension of heart and mind... Smile

Ganda talaga to see a group/set picture.  Makes you see the differences of each variants.  Even though, I'm not an expert of Shermans (or WWII armor for that matter) -- I can easily appreciate the units...

good for the AFP to acquire a real tank like the Sherman than the current scorpion
are there any real tanks (w/ caterpillar tracks) in the philippines today? aside from our scorpion?

Hi guys,

Jepot,

Fantastic job on the M4 Composite Hull Sherman, it looks exactly like the one that I saw in PMA Baguio in the early 90's.

Inspired by your conversion (and being a Sherman fan myself), I plan to make the M4A3, M4A1 and M4 Composite Hull in 1/35 scale. Tamiya, Dragon and even Italeri have M4A3 kits, while Dragon has the M4A1. Dragon also made the Composite Hull, but with a Firefly turret. Seems simple enough to make a Phil. Army M4 Composite, buy the Dragon Firefly and use the Tamiya M4A3 75mm turret. A bit pricey, as you need 2 kits to kit bash.

well, better than nothing.......AFP armor pa rin!  thumbs up

Regards,

WW

Hi guys,

For Paul Kyre:

Currently, the only tracked vehicle we have that can be considered a "tank" is the CVR(T) Scorpion. The rest of AFP armor are wheeled, like the Simba, V150, V300. Other tracked vehicles still in active service are the PMC LVTP5, and PA M113 and AIFV. Have not seen the Samaritan in photos lately.

Speaking of tracked vehicles, below is what I know of tracked armor the AFP used, from post war to current, these are all based on photographic evidence from the National Library, Lopez Museum and local newspapers:

M5A1 Stuart Light Tank
M4 Sherman Series Medium Tank
M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer
M24 Chaffee Light Tank (used only in Korean war, was loaned to us by the US)
BTW, there are 2 Chaffees in a public park in Lingayen, these M24 were donated by the Japanese (JGSDF)

M41 Walker Bulldog
M113 APC
CVR (T) Scorpion Light/Recon tank
CVR (T) Samaritan Armored Ambulance
YPR-765 AIFV
LVTP-5 series.

If I left out any other tracked armor, please feel free to add to the list  mil wink

Most of the above kits are available in kit form, from 1/72, 1/35 and even 1/48

There are reports of M3 Stuart Hexagon Turret Stuarts and M10 Tank Destroyers used by the AFP after WW2, but so far no photographic evidence in AFP markings to prove it yet.......

The PA also had the M-7 Priest self propelled howitzer.  There is an example in the PMA.

there seems to be something different with the tracks. This is a photo of a photo i took at the army museum showing the sherman tanks we used to have. Note the tracks is "blocky".
