Test firing of a 105mm Oto Melara Pack howitzer at Fort Magsaysay.

Per MBLT, the OTO Melaras were declared "beyond economical repair" 9 years ago and were about to be returned to GHQ November last year.  Of the 10 in inventory, 8 have now been restored and made operational.  These will now be part of the Philippine Marine Ready Force and strategic reserves of the Marine Corps.

Waste not, want not!

Who declared it non-operational? Was a budget been disbursed and not put into good use and the best alibi is, the guns are beyond economical repair? Then how come some groups on their own initiative were able to restore 8 of those 10 beyond economical repair equipment? bash

^ Maybe "beyond economical repair" means "you can't pay me enough to sit down and figure out how to make this damn thing work again."

Maybe they did but one thing they did not do though is install the Floro upgrade which automatically ejects the spent shell.

Hmmm......... I can't vouch for artillery guns, but when I fired the Carl Gustav 84mm rifle which works out to be around 3 rounds a minute. When I open the venturi cap to extract the shell, I was surprised that it was not that hot as i expected. It was lukewarm, those type that is bearable for humans and I did it without any gloves.
From the video, I believe it is a demonstration, thus the soldier slowly takes out the shell and hold it in his hands. But during range or actual combat, u just flick it onto the ground.

I've seen photos and videos of American and Israeli artillerymen handling shells by hand.

No need for hand protect whatever that is the army is doing. its the marine way. Actually have seen the army and USMC fire artillery and in 30 yrs experience never saw it. Try it out its easy. Unless of course its a hangfire.

sorry for the dumb question..

are these Oto Melara howitzers different from the M101 howitzers? also, how come the Army and the Marines decided not to buy upgrade packages (e.g. Floro, Giat) to modernize its inventory of M101s?

The OTO Melara pack howitzers are light and portable and were originally designed for Italy's Airborne and Alpine Brigades.  They can be carried by helicopter, air-dropped, towed by light vehicles or disassembled for easy transportation over rough terrain.  The M101s (formerly known as M2s) are American, dating from WW2.  As with a lot of things built by the US during that time they tend to last forever.  The Army bought upgrades for some of its M101s but if it ain't really broke, why fix it?

Why dont they get some m-198 howitzer?  Is it because they dont have the fund ?

If the M101s, M114s OTO Melara m56 and Soltams can do the job why bother? Wink

By the way, the Chinese now produce and market an unlicensed copy of the Oto Melara pack howitzer, among other things.

This is what I'm wondering, if the Chinese can, why can't we. Maybe just make one NATO compliant to aligned with allies.
