This post from the Philippine-made mortars thread got me thinking:

I think establishing that nitrate plant would be a bigger priority , never mind the tube, make sure you can make the ammunition first!

Aside from the Government Arsenal (GA) (and perhaps the MILF and their RPG-shops), what other companies manufacture ammunition?

What raw materials do we still have to import?

As per their site: http://www.arsenal.mil.ph/profmanu.html, the GA is only able to manufacture the following:

  • 5.56 mm M193
  • Cal .30 M1
  • Carbine
  • Cal .30 M2
  • 7.62 mm M80
  • Cal .45 M 1911
  • Cal .38 Special
  • 9 mm Parabellum

Well, at least the PMC grease guns won't run out of ammo.

Nice historical perspective from "the boss", also taken from the mortar thread:

A little off-topic but an interesting historical sidebar:  Pre-Spanish Filipinos weren't big on making their own gunpowder.  We imported most of it from China.  What we did make was made from bat guano and was considered of low-quality.  Even up to the Spanish Era Moros would buy gunpowder from Chinese or English traders or American whalers.

Is Floro a manufacturer of ammo, or just a distributor?

As far as I know (...and this is old info), the extruded and ball smokeless powder used for ammo production. 5.56mm, 9mm, .45ACP need different types.

they are certified...how come GA would not upgrade its facilities? why they would not want to be certified? Or...why not GA co-developed and co-improved their facilities with the help of armscor?

An AFP officer once told me that the AFP imports match-grade ammunition for use by our snipers. I thought this was because there was something wrong with the GA. Apparently, production of this quality of ammunition is a bit of an art.

From: http://www.snipercentral.com/ammocomparison.htm

The federal gold medal match is still the standard by which all other match ammo is judged. How they can get so good accuracy and consistency from such mass produced ammo is a mystery to me. Black Hills match grade ammo is right up there with Federal, is just as consistent, and in my particular rifle, is just as accurate, though I cannot say its any MORE accurate then Federal. Its a good alternative, with the price per box "about" $2 cheaper then federal. The HSM ammo is the cheapest of them all by a large margin (about $5 cheaper then Blackhills, and about $7 cheaper then federal per box). But its also not nearly as accurate. You can expect the same accuracy as M118, and it makes a good replacement for those that cannot get M118. M118 of course is military issue, and cannot compare with Federal Match ammo. Though I hear the new M118LR is excellent. Which will be my standard use ammo? Hum, I'm not rich, or I'd just flat out say Federal 175gr match, so I'm not sure. I still have a lot of ammo to burn through before I have to decide. I'm going to run some long range tests in field conditions (unknown range, 500-800 meters) and see how they all perform...

Show me a country where everything in their arsenal is indigenous.

The US military buys a lot from EADS.
