NUKE! It's the fuel of the future

« on: May 11, 2006, 11:39:59 PM »

I was travelling on some back roads recently when my attention was drawn to a line of surplus military trucks up for sale. The line looked very similar to the picture below

I was thinking, whatever happened to those 'supersized' M-35 trucks that AFP inherited from USAF and USN?

I am very sure PAF got at least two of them right after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption and not because Uncle Sam handed them over. They were 'hyjacked' by PAF EM's from US motorpools, had their serial numbers defaced, and quickly painted Air Force blue before being brought out of the gate presumably on to Villamor.  There must have been some at Subic also.

PMC could use those platforms for their gun truck project instead of the M-35. They look a lot bigger and meaner. Maybe they also have bigger power plants. How about looking into it, mblt 6?

That's an M923 bigfoot if I'm not mistaken. Would be nice to have some of these babies.

About the M35's...The last time I was in Texas, I went down to Terrel and there was some sort of backwards National Guard depot there. The whole front perimeter was fenced using old M35's. What a waste really. I guess there were 40 of them lined up. Some where M34's too.

I would just like to ask. Why are the PMC's gun trucks are called gun trucks? From the pictures of them all I can see is the .50 cal HMG and no guns. Why aren't they called HMG trucks or MG trucks instead?

Heavy machine guns (HMG), even anti-tank guns are still, at a very basic level, guns. These are weapons designed for direct fire, as opposed to indirect fire weapons like howitzers, mortars, etc.. Hence the term "gun truck" is approrpriate.

Americans also call similarly modified trucks as "gun trucks"

As I mentioned, there were at least two in AFP inventory in 1991.

Every time I pass by a military surplus yard selling various kinds of military trucks, I would invariably think of the AFP and the condition of its fleet of trucks. In many ways, the surplus trucks are in much better condition than those of  AFP. Why can't our Ambassador and many consuls visit these places and try to see if we can buy the trucks at a good price? If I'm not mistaken a running M-35 sells for less than $10,000.00 only.

What exactly is the role of a Military Attache? Shouldn't we try to contact them and find out how much leeway are they granted by the government of the Philippines when it comes to scouting for military hardware for the AFP? They shouldn't just be attending social occassions of Filipino communities and fatten their asses in their air conditioned offices while waiting for doleouts from Pentagon. Hueys, 4x4 SUV's, 6x6, 4x4 full size and compact pick up trucks, you name them, they could be had by a determined soul. Remember that village or small town sheriff who accumulated quite an arsenal just by sending letters of solicitations to the right people. He had a Huey, trucks, full size and compact pick up trucks and numerous SUV's that he gathered from the military for his supposed fight against drugs.

Hingi lang yun, e kung babayaran pa natin....Let's get our act together. In the early years of Israel, their people use to travel all around the US looking for  Jews that were willing to help and solicited their help. Look where they are now.

Wala tayong bargaining power mula ng tinangal nila ang bases at umalis pa sila sa iraq. Maraming mayan sa america ay hudyo kaya madali silang makainfluensiya sa congress ng kano.

We do not need to influence the US Congress to get the trucks I am talking about. What we need is a Military Attache that's cunning, innovative and a guy with a take-charge and can-do attitude. He can travel the less-beaten paths and look for these trucks that are being sold or even auctioned off. He can then buy them in bulk or wholesale then ship them off to the Philippines. We need to influence only the  US Capitol Hill when we're hoping to get 'free' trucks, and that's not what I had in mind.

With regards to the Jews, well the Filipinos may not be as influencial and as monied as the American Jews but their help in this regard is really not needed. I just mentioned the  fact that in the early years of the Jewish state, their government agents were very aggressive and industrious that they could accomplish so many things with their meager resources. The fact that they thought of soliciting financial help even from individuals was just a testament to their aggressiveness. Our Military Attache need not resort to that tactic. He needs only to be half as aggressive since the trucks I am talking about are not even classified military hardware. They're just junk in the eyes of the US military, hence were sold to the public at bargain prices.
