RPS DATU KALANTIAW ( PS76)
« on: July 19, 2007, 05:23:24 AM »
I said double the fun: (PS) 38 x 2 = (PS) 76

The flagship of the PN back in its heyday, she was a Cannon Class Destroyer Escort.  orginally DE 170 ( USS Booth), she is a sistership of PF5 ( ex DE 168) and PF 11 ( ex DE 169)

Magnificently looking with its surface search and air search radars...

a view of the fantail with the ship name... na napaka hirap gawin considering the size of the letters I had to use...

i have had a headache due to severe eyestrain ( and we are not even talking about the riggings...)

her beautiful outboard profile...

considering the lack of references, the original ships plans, despite its condition was a gem of a source of reference...

Her sterling record in support of COIN ops in the 70s was amongst her achievements but unfortunately, in 1981, she sank amidst rough seas in Northern Philippines...

One of my Holy Grails in my quest for rare topics, I used a lot of rather costly photoetch parts for the radars, hair ( head hair, the flowing type of course) from my staff for the riggings, and odds and ends for the details.

This model would not have been made without the very significant inputs given to me by one of our posters here known only as  ALDEBARAN...Thank you sir for your help!   He once served aboard this proud ship...I dedicate this model to him and specially to the memory of the sailors who died while performing their duties of guarding Phiippine shores...

Enjoy...

Very, very nice!  Impressive!

Dang, those PEs and (Hair) riggings are surely giving you eye strains and teardrops...

Did you have to add a brush of solvaset to set the cut-up decals?  Hirap mag-set niyan, nakakagigil... My neck usually stiffs when setting/making these small decals swim and alighn on the water film...  :eyes:

Thanks for the compliments.

I used Future to set the decals. Tedious and rather touchy procedure for the letters to align into place- another reason why my eyes got some eyestrain...

Thanks again...

The references were simple picture in a book ( overhead balck and white shot), a hazy picture from Mr Aldebaran but was useful for comparison with the picture in the book, confirmatory notes, pics of the beached ship from navsource.org, adn of course the ship plans.  All these were correlated and I did some sleuthing and voila- there you have the ship...

I even saw a very very blurred pic of the ship with a helideck at the fantail- that was too much for me, the dimensions were not clear nor were the details hence i did not attach a helideck.

But for my next man -o'- war project, there is a big chance a helideck will be emplaced...

The hardest part of the project was the mast- this is what took me so long to build the kit- having had lack of references on how the tripod mast was to look like; of course the riggings, the PE parts and the ships name were another set of major obstacles but once I was able to make the mast, everything else followed...

Hi Jep,

Where will you display this? My uncle was TF CO (and died) on her last voyage.

Well this model rests in my office - as with my other shiip models ( except for LT501 which is at CSSB HQ)...

Noticed that you bought the Adams class kit that has the ship railings; cheaper than buying gold medal photo-etch set.  I got that kit too, because of the railings and the ship name decal for fantail.

THe railings for PS 76 are GMM and Flagship Models.

From the Adams kit, I only got the letters.

I see triple torpedo tube launchers for Mk. 32 torpedoes.  Also see depth charge track at the stern.

I hope someday we get the chance to board the PF-11 Rajah Humabon.
